PORTISHEAD RADIO - GKA
THE WORLD'S PREMIER
MARITIME RADIO COAST STATION
1ST JULY 1928 - 30TH APRIL 2000
THIS SITE IS DEDICATED TO THE HUNDREDS OF RADIO OFFICERS WHO WORKED AT PORTISHEAD RADIO - THEY SERVED WITH PRIDE.
The receiving site at Highbridge, Somerset, circa 1950. The masts disappeared around 1983, and the foreground is now covered with houses. The radio station site is now demolished, and is awaiting a new housing development. A sad end to a once-busy site.
THE HIGHBRIDGE SITE - FEBRUARY 2008
Building work has now started in earnest - the houses are laid out and all old station boundaries and trees have been demolished (even though I understood that the trees were protected). There is no longer any sign that a radio station even existed.
There is no news regarding street names or similar; I will pester Wimpeys and Bellway to ensure that something suitable can be agreed.
