Devizes Radio - the days before Portishead

DEVIZES RADIO

The photographs on this page were kindly provided by the late Bill Cleverley, ex-R/O at Devizes Radio.

Devizes Radio was the predecessor to Portishead Radio, opening in 1920, and continuing until the receiving station at Highbridge opened in 1928. Devizes continued as a transmitting station for a few more years before all transmissions were made from Portishead, near Bristol.

Very little remains today of the Devizes site except for some aerial stay mounting blocks and a couple of brick huts.

A general view of Devizes Radio, looking from the East.

1927 - The night staff signing off were marooned for a day or so by snow. Picture shows the staff being relieved.

The car is a Buick Saloon.

Shift changes were at 0830, 1630 and 2300.

This wonderful picture of the early days of wireless shows Ted Short constructing the rectifier compartment for the new GKT (Shortwave - 36.54m and another around 18m wavelength (no kc/s or kHz in those days!))
